What to Expect at Your First Lactation Visit

Whether you’re preparing for your baby’s arrival or already in the early days of breastfeeding, scheduling a lactation visit is a wonderful step toward getting the support you deserve. At One Family Lactation, we want you to feel comfortable, heard, and empowered. Here’s what you can expect during your first visit. If possible, try not to feed your baby immediately before the appointment so we can observe a full feeding together.
A Warm and Supportive Start
Your visit begins in a calm, caring environment where your experiences are respected and your goals matter. We understand that feeding your baby can be emotional and deeply personal. Our job is to meet you where you are and help you move forward with confidence.
A Personalized Health History
We’ll begin by discussing your medical background, pregnancy, birth experience, and any feeding concerns you’ve experienced so far. This helps us understand your journey and offer care that is tailored to your family’s unique needs.
Baby’s Assessment
We may check your baby’s weight, oral anatomy, and reflexes. If your baby is ready to feed, we’ll observe a nursing session to evaluate latch, positioning, and milk transfer. This gives us valuable information about how feeding is going and how we can help improve it.
Your Assessment
We’ll talk through any discomfort or concerns you may have, including nipple pain, engorgement, milk supply, or pumping challenges. This is your time to ask questions. No topic is too big or too small.
Gentle, Hands-On Support
If needed, we’ll provide guidance to improve latch and positioning, offer strategies to increase comfort, and demonstrate techniques to optimize milk transfer. All support is offered with your comfort, preferences, and consent at the center.
A Clear Plan Moving Forward
Before the visit ends, you’ll receive a personalized care plan with practical recommendations, written instructions, and any necessary referrals. We’ll also discuss options for follow-up visits or virtual check-ins to support your ongoing breastfeeding journey.

You’re Not Alone
Breastfeeding is a journey that does not have to be walked alone. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, we’re here to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
