Tetanus

Tetanus is a bacterial infection that can cause lockjaw, severe muscle spasms and fever.

  • Mode of Transmission: Contracted through contaminated soil or feces — not rusty nails.
  • Incubation Period: Symptoms appear anywhere from 2 days to months after exposure (average 14 days).
  • Symptoms
    • Jaw cramping (“Lockjaw“) – Difficulty opening the mouth
    • Painful muscle stiffness – Especially in the neck, back & abdomen
    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Severe muscle spasms – Can cause fractures or breathing problems
    • Fever, sweating & rapid heartbeat
    • Seizures in severe cases
  • Treatment:
    • Human Tetanus Immune Globulin (HTIG) is the primary treatment.
    • Tetanus vaccine may help reduce latent effects but does not cure an active infection.
    • Once symptoms develop, only supportive care is available.
  • High Mortality Rate: 30-40% of infected individuals do not survive.
  • Prolonged Recovery: For those who survive, muscle spasms persist for about a week and gradually subside over several weeks.
  • Vaccination is the best defense against tetanus. Stay protected.
